Overwatch Escort

Attackers push a payload along a track to the delivery point while defenders try to stop them before time runs out.

How to Win

Attackers win by successfully delivering the payload to the final checkpoint before time runs out. Reaching an intermediate checkpoint resets the timer. Defenders win if they stop the payload until the timer expires.

History

Escort was part of Overwatch's original launch in 2016 and remains one of the most played modes. Maps like Dorado, Route 66, and Watchpoint: Gibraltar were among the first maps in the game. The payload concept draws inspiration from classic shooter genres and was designed to create natural focal points for team fights.

Key Mechanics

  • Payload moves faster with more attackers nearby — up to 3 players for maximum speed
  • A single defender on the payload stops its progress entirely if they outnumber attackers
  • Checkpoints reset the attack timer and serve as new attacker spawn points
  • Overtime is triggered when an attacker is on the payload as time expires
  • Defenders can slowly push the payload backward by standing on it uncontested
  • The payload provides partial cover and line-of-sight advantages for attackers

Attacking Tips

  • Stay on or near the payload constantly — every second of movement is progress
  • Coordinate ultimate abilities for checkpoint pushes where defenders are strongest
  • Tracer, Lucio, and Sombra can quickly return to the payload after dying
  • High-ground denial near the payload is often the key to breaking defender holds
  • Group spawn timing and push together — staggered respawns waste momentum

Defending Tips

  • Establish choke points before the payload arrives — defenders who react have the advantage
  • Contest the payload to drain attacker time, even if you cannot hold the position
  • Fall back incrementally — giving up ground slowly is better than losing all at once
  • Save ultimate abilities for when attackers push hard through checkpoints
  • Anti-healing and denial abilities (Ana sleep, Sombra hack) are highly effective on payload defense

Recommended Heroes

Tank

Reinhardt, Orisa, Mauga

Frontline tanks can create space on the payload and shield teammates through chokepoints

Damage

Bastion, Torbjorn, Symmetra

Turret-based heroes excel on defense, while aggressive flankers like Tracer disrupt defenders on attack

Support

Lucio, Ana, Baptiste

Lucio's speed boost accelerates payload pushes and enables fast repositioning; Ana's anti-heal counters bunker defenses

Escort — Frequently Asked Questions

How fast does the payload move in Escort?

The payload moves at baseline speed with 1 attacker nearby, noticeably faster with 2, and at maximum speed with 3 or more attackers in its proximity radius. Defenders on the payload with no attackers present will cause it to slowly roll backward.

Can defenders push the payload backward?

Yes — if defenders stand on the payload uncontested (no attackers present), it will slowly push backward toward the previous checkpoint. However, this reversal is capped at the last checkpoint reached.

What triggers overtime in Escort?

Overtime begins when at least one attacker is touching the payload and time hits zero. It continues as long as an attacker remains on the payload. Once the payload is fully uncontested, overtime ends and the match is over.

Do checkpoints reset the full timer?

Checkpoints refresh the attack timer to a set amount, giving attackers more time to complete the rest of the route. This makes early momentum extremely valuable since capturing checkpoints essentially banks time.

What heroes are best on Escort maps?

Tanks like Reinhardt and Orisa anchor the payload and shield teammates through chokepoints. Lucio is invaluable on both attack and defense for his speed boost and Sound Barrier ultimate. Tracer excels on attack for her ability to return to the payload instantly after dying.

How many Escort maps are there in Overwatch?

Overwatch features several dedicated Escort maps including Dorado, Route 66, Watchpoint: Gibraltar, Junkertown, Rialto, Havana, Circuit Royal, and Shambali Monastery. New Escort maps are added periodically with new seasons.

Is Escort in competitive rotation?

Yes, Escort is one of the core competitive modes in Overwatch 2 and appears regularly in the ranked map pool alongside Hybrid, Control, Push, Flashpoint, and Clash.

What is the hardest Escort map to defend?

Dorado and Watchpoint: Gibraltar are commonly cited as attacker-favored maps due to their wide routes and multiple flank paths. Junkertown's long third point is notorious for being difficult for attackers to reach, making it a strong defender map.
