Overwatch Flashpoint

Teams race to capture 3 of 5 sequential control points that spawn one at a time across the map.

How to Win

Capture 3 out of 5 sequential Flashpoints before your opponents do.

History

Flashpoint was introduced in Overwatch 2 Season 6 (2023) alongside new maps Suravasa and New Junk City. It was designed to address feedback that previous modes felt too static, creating a dynamic format that forces constant movement and map awareness.

Key Mechanics

  • Five capture points exist on the map, but only one is active at a time
  • After a point is captured, the next activates at a new predetermined location
  • Both teams race to the new point — neither starts closer by default
  • Maps are significantly larger than standard Overwatch maps
  • There is no attacker/defender distinction — both teams are equal at the start
  • Capture speed increases if more teammates are on the point

Attacking Tips

  • Predict where the next Flashpoint will appear and begin rotating before the current one is decided
  • Arrive at the new point before the enemy — first touch gives immediate capture progress
  • Split pressure across the map between points to create confusion
  • Save ultimates for critical point fights rather than random skirmishes

Defending Tips

  • Rotation speed is the most important skill on Flashpoint maps
  • Contest a point even if you are at a numbers disadvantage — slowing the capture is valuable
  • Group up as a team between point activations rather than fighting scattered 1v1s
  • Track the rotation pattern and anticipate where your opponents will go

Recommended Heroes

Tank

Mauga, Ball, D.Va

Mobile tanks that can reach points quickly and dive in are preferred over slow, stationary tanks

Damage

Tracer, Genji, Pharah

Mobility is everything — heroes that can cross the large maps quickly arrive first and secure early capture progress

Support

Lucio, Moira, Kiriko

Lucio's team-wide speed boost is incredibly valuable for point rotations; mobile supports keep up with fast compositions

Flashpoint — Frequently Asked Questions

In what order do Flashpoints activate?

Flashpoints activate in a predetermined order unique to each map. The sequence is fixed but spans large distances across the map, forcing teams to constantly rotate between very different areas.

Can you capture a Flashpoint before the enemy arrives?

Yes — if you arrive at a Flashpoint with no enemies contesting, you begin capturing it immediately. Arriving first with your full team often means capturing the point entirely before enemies even get there.

Is Flashpoint in competitive rotation?

Yes, Flashpoint is part of the competitive mode rotation in Overwatch 2, appearing alongside Escort, Hybrid, Control, Push, and Clash. Current Flashpoint maps include Suravasa and New Junk City.

How large are Flashpoint maps compared to other modes?

Flashpoint maps are significantly larger than any other Overwatch map type. The large size is intentional — it forces teams to rotate quickly between distant points, making mobility and rotation speed the central strategic challenge.

What is the best strategy for winning Flashpoint?

The team that arrives at each new Flashpoint point first with more players wins the majority of captures. Prioritize rotation speed over fighting: use Lucio, disengage from losing skirmishes early, and always start moving toward the next point before the current fight is over.

Why is Lucio considered essential on Flashpoint maps?

Lucio's Crossfade speed boost gives his entire team a passive movement speed increase. On Flashpoint's enormous maps, this can mean arriving at a newly spawned point several seconds before the enemy, which often translates to an uncontested or nearly uncontested capture.

Do both teams spawn at equal distance from each Flashpoint?

Not always — depending on where the point spawns relative to each team's last position, one team may have a natural proximity advantage. This is why predicting the next point location and starting your rotation early is crucial.

Can you contest a Flashpoint to prevent the enemy from capturing it?

Yes — even a single player contesting a Flashpoint completely prevents the enemy from capturing it. Running in alone to contest while teammates rotate is a valid and often valuable strategy that can buy enough time for your team to arrive and retake.
