Yeti Hunt

5 Mei hunters vs. 1 Winston Yeti in a tense asymmetric showdown.

Yeti Hunt is one of Overwatch's most unique and creative seasonal modes — a 5v1 asymmetric experience introduced during the 2016 Winter Wonderland event. Five players take on the role of Mei Yeti Hunters, working together to reduce a single player's Winston (the Yeti) to zero HP before it can collect enough meat to trigger its devastating Primal Rage. The Yeti is outnumbered but has 5,000 HP to compensate. The Hunters have traps, freeze abilities, and numbers. The Yeti has raw power, mobility, and the terrifying threat of an empowered Primal Rage that — if triggered — makes it nearly impossible to stop. Every game is a nerve-wracking race between a coordinated hunt and a monster's desperate survivability.

Objective

Hunters: Reduce the Yeti's 5,000 HP to zero before it collects 4 meat pieces and triggers Primal Rage. Yeti: Collect all 4 meat pieces to charge and activate Primal Rage, then use the empowered ultimate to eliminate the entire hunter team.

Key Mechanics

Yeti's 5,000 HP

The Yeti (Winston) begins with 5,000 HP to offset being alone against 5 opponents. Standard Winston mechanics apply — Jump Pack, Barrier Projector, and Tesla Cannon. Environmental deaths teleport the Yeti back to the cave spawn.

Meat Collection

4 meat pieces are scattered across the map at fire-marked locations. Each one the Yeti consumes charges its Primal Rage by 25%. Primal Rage activates automatically once all 4 are collected. The Yeti's entire win condition revolves around securing all 4 pieces.

Yeti Trap (Hunters)

Mei's Blizzard is replaced by a metal-toothed Yeti Trap — similar to Junkrat's Steel Trap — that requires a brief charge time before activating. Placing a second trap despawns the first. Traps can be placed on fireplace locations to deny meat pickups.

Cryo-Freeze (Hunters)

Mei's Ice Block restores HP over 2 seconds instead of the usual 4, with a shorter invulnerability window. It's still valuable for escaping a Primal Rage, but less reliable than in standard play.

Primal Rage

Once the Yeti collects all 4 meats, Primal Rage activates with dramatically enhanced damage and knockback. A skilled Yeti player in Primal Rage can eliminate the entire hunter team before the ability expires. Hunters should scatter and use Ice Block to survive.

Strategic Meat Denial

Hunters can place Yeti Traps on fireplace locations where meat spawns to prevent the Yeti from picking them up. If hunters predict upcoming meat spawns, they can form a defensive perimeter and contest the pickup with freeze attacks.

Tips & Strategy

  • 1As the Yeti, prioritize meat collection over engaging hunters — do not brawl until you have Primal Rage ready
  • 2As a Hunter, place traps directly on fireplace spawn points before the Yeti approaches — pre-positioning traps is far more effective than reactive placement
  • 3Hunters should coordinate freezes together to maximize the damage window on the Yeti — a single Mei freeze is easy to escape
  • 4If the Yeti has 3 meats, retreat from the predicted 4th spawn location — triggering Primal Rage into a coordinated hunter group is a near-certain wipe
  • 5The Yeti should use Jump Pack aggressively to create distance and break line of sight between meat pickups
  • 6Hunters who go alone to find the Yeti are easy targets — stick together and approach as a group of 3–4

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Yeti win in Yeti Hunt?

The Yeti wins by collecting all 4 meat pieces to fill the Primal Rage meter, then using the empowered Primal Rage to eliminate all 5 hunters before the ability expires. Primal Rage lasts approximately 10 seconds and makes Winston extremely powerful. The Yeti can also win by reducing all hunters to zero HP through standard abilities before they can kill the Yeti.

What does the Yeti Trap do in Yeti Hunt?

The Yeti Trap replaces Mei's Blizzard ultimate. It's a placeable metal trap (like Junkrat's Steel Trap) that activates after a brief charge time. When the Yeti steps on it, it's immobilized temporarily, giving hunters an ideal freeze-and-damage window. Placing traps on the fireplace meat spawn locations is the strongest denial strategy.

Can hunters win after the Yeti activates Primal Rage?

It's extremely difficult but possible. Hunters must immediately scatter in different directions and use Ice Block to stall for time. If the team can survive the Primal Rage duration while dealing damage from range, there is still a chance — but it requires significant coordination and luck.
