About Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro is one of the most lore-rich locations in the entire Overwatch universe. It is the hometown of Lucio Correia dos Santos — musician, freedom fighter, and Overwatch hero — and virtually every major event that shaped Lucio's story happened here. The city sits on the southeast coast of Brazil, a sprawling, vibrant metropolis that fought through the Omnic Crisis and emerged scarred but resilient.

After the crisis, Rio became contested ground between local developer Calado and the Vishkar Corporation for a major redevelopment contract. When the Calado building was mysteriously destroyed — an act widely attributed to Vishkar sabotage — the corporation won the contract and reshaped the city's skyline. The displacement of Rio's favelas, including Lucio's community, drove him to steal Vishkar's sound technology and use it to liberate his people. That act made him a hero and a global music icon.

When Null Sector targets Rio in the Season 6 Invasion, the "Resistance" story mission brings players to Lucio's city at its most vulnerable — and most personal.

Resistance — Mission Overview

Resistance is a cooperative PvE story mission for 1–4 players, set in the streets and waterfront of Rio de Janeiro during the Null Sector invasion. Players fight through Lucio's city to resist the occupation and protect the communities he has always fought for.

Setting

Rio's vibrant streets, favelas, and waterfront — including locations connected to Lucio's origin story and Vishkar's contested presence in the city.

PvP Connection

The PvP Paraíso map shares this geography. Explore both to see how the same city looks in peacetime versus under invasion.

Key Locations

Lucio's Favela

The overcrowded, underfunded favela where Lucio grew up. It was ground zero for Vishkar's displacement efforts — and the community Lucio ultimately freed with stolen sound technology.

Clube Sinestesia

A vibrant Lucio-themed music club in the heart of the city. This location features in the PvP Paraíso map and represents the cultural energy that defines Rio in Overwatch lore.

Estádio das Rãs

The iconic Lúcioball arena, visible in the Lucioball seasonal event. Set on the waterfront of Rio, it captures the spirit of the city's love for football and celebration.

Vishkar Architecture

After winning the redevelopment contract, Vishkar transformed the city center. The futuristic Vishkar towers on the Rio skyline stand as a constant reminder of the corporation's controversial history in Lucio's city.

Lucio's Rio — The Full Story

No hero in Overwatch has a more geographically grounded origin than Lucio. Rio de Janeiro isn't just his birthplace — it's the source of every major choice he has ever made. Growing up in a cramped favela during the financial fallout of the Omnic Crisis, Lucio watched Vishkar Corporation systematically displace his community in the name of redevelopment.

His response was to steal Vishkar's own sonic technology and turn it against them — using the very tools of their oppression to free his people. The act made him a wanted man in Vishkar's eyes and a hero to millions around the world. His music became a rallying cry for communities facing similar struggles globally.

When Null Sector invades Rio in Season 6, Lucio isn't just fighting for the world — he's fighting for home.
